Linux Administration: A Beginners Guide 4th Edition

Welcome to the web site for Linux Administration: A Beginners Guide 4th Edition!

In January, 2000, Linux Administration: A Beginners Guide hit the bookshelves for the first time. The author used a simple guiding principle: Treat the reader as a fellow intelligent person capable of understanding real life administration issues. The backing assumption was that the reader is already familiar with basic Windows administration and is looking to get his hands dirty with Linux. The result was a hit; readers appreciated the fact that the book contained solid real-life examples and content. A reader having gone through the book could effectively manage a production Linux system using the CLI alone if necessary.

Today we introduce the fourth edition of this book. The guiding principle that was used in the first edition is the same principle used today. The difference of course is that the content has significantly evolved as Linux has evolved. The difference between the third and fourth edition alone is significant! A reader picking up the book today can learn the ins and outs of managing a modern Linux distribution.

This web site is meant to close the feedback loop. We want to hear from our readers about what works, what doesn't, and what's broken. While we've gone through great lengths to eliminate errors, there are bound to be a few gotchas that we missed. An errata will be maintained so that we can show what should have been written in the case any mistakes are found.
